Meet DU’s New Undergraduate Student Government President and Vice President

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DU chapter.

Our campus celebrities for this week are two very important students here at DU. This week is just the beginning for DU’s new undergraduate student government president and vice president, Cam Hickert and Jess Davidson. These two are both part of DU greek life and they have some great ideas to make DU the school of all of its student’s dreams. Lucky for us at Her Campus we got a chance to get to know them and to ask them a few questions about what they plan to work on and what new ideas they have in mind.

Jess Davidson:Major: Political Science, International Studies and Leadership MinorYear in School: 4th year +1, Student in the Master’s of Public Policy ProgramStudent Organizations: USG, Chi Omega, Pioneer Leadership Program Hometown: Fort Collins, Colorado

Cam Hickert:Majors: Physics and International Studies, Minor in Leadership Year in School: 3rd-yearStudent Organizations: DU Debate Union, Undergraduate Student Government, Society of Physics Students, Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, Pioneer Leadership Program, Honors ProgramHometown: Colorado Springs, CO

Her Campus: What do you like about DU and why did you want to run?

JD: DU is an incredible institution. This campus is so full of life in so many ways, and every time I go to a lacrosse tailgate, or walk in to see Jackson Katz speak and there are more students than seats, I feel so proud to be a Pioneer. When I give tours, I describe DU as this trifecta of perfect location, a great academic experience and engaged student life.

CH: DU, better than any other school in the nation, combines a ridiculous amount of opportunities with an incredible opportunity to actually reach those opportunities (i.e., there’s a lot of cool slots, but you aren’t competing with 20,000 students for every one). I have become passionate about crossing traditional “silo” boundaries in my personal life at DU, and through that process realized so many other students also were excited about the same thing. This illustrated to me a larger institutional problem, and this position provided the perfect opportunity to unite my own passion with those of other students interested in making DU a better place.

Her Campus: What type of government experience do you have?

JD: I was the Second Year Senator and Chair of Academic Affairs during my second year at DU. I also was on Class Council my first and second years, which is a subsidiary of USG. Outside of DU, I’m also involved in local and national government as a student lobbyist for Greek Life at the national level and I intern for a non-partisan contract lobbying firm at the Colorado State Capitol.

CH: I served as Secretary of Communications for the Undergraduate Student Government my second year on campus.

I'm from Westchester, New York and am a junior at the University of Denver. Currently I'm a media studies major and a double minor in fine arts and communications. When I'm not busy writing papers, avoiding math or at a sorority event I can be found in the mountains or watching movies. One day I will probably be making indie films and hanging out on the ski slopes. My Pro Tip: Do what you love, love what you do.
