Best Bay to Breakers Outfits

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCU chapter.

Ah yes, the much anticipated, much adored San Francisco holiday of spring quarter: Bay to Breakers (bae-ta-breakers). Although the event is in fact a marathon intended for those active workout junkies to conquer yet another on-foot masterpiece course, it also claims the fame of one of the biggest parties of the season. This is a day where pretty much anything goes, ranging from obscene costumes to public nudity, dance parties to catastrophic train rides. When I say anything, I mean anything.

San Franciscans align the streets at the wee hours of the morning, blasting their favorite jams and speculating with neighbors about one another’s costumes. Not an SF native? Not to worry, there’s a train for that. The 6:15AM Cal Train arrives promptly at the San Francisco station, carrying some of the Bay Area’s most hopeful candidates: the college kids. The doors open and Cal Train employees are pale in the face and exhausted already; a fitting appearance after trying to patrol hundreds of intoxicated kids swinging from rafter to rafter.

The race begins with what looks like a stampede of an entire Party City catalogue; people everywhere dressed to the nines in elaborate and fantastic outerwear (or lack thereof). Whether homemade, bought in-store, or found in costume boxes just hours before, the outfits are one of the more “memorable” parts of the day.
