Coming into a university as a freshman is scary. Dare I say that while being a new transfer student might not be worse, it certainly comes with it’s own set of challenges. As a transfer student, you usually are at least 20 years old, or come in as a junior, which typically means everyone assumes you’ve been at this university for a while and that you know what you’re doing. In actuality, you’re kind of freaking out inside because the fact of the matter is that you have absolutely no clue what’s going on.
Another annoying feat we transfer students have to endure is the lovely way our credits transfer with us. Confession time: Yes, I am a third year sophomore and as much as I would like to pretend I’m in no rush to graduate, I am. These are just a few of the complications we have to go through, but don’t get me wrong, there are a ton of advantages to being a transfer as well. For those of us who went to community college, we’ve managed to save possibly thousands of dollars by just waiting a few extra years to make the transition to a university.
During this time, some of us were able to stay close to home and spend a little extra time with our family before we finally decided to leave the nest – at which point, we were probably more than ready to. I’d like to believe that transfer students have some added wisdom when it comes to navigating college life as opposed to those who come in as freshmen because we’re a little older, but to be honest, I’m not quite sure. But fret not – whether you’re new to this campus as a freshman or as a transfer student, everyone on campus is incredibly understanding of our unique needs as newbies and are more than willing to help.
