Entering college gets you in touch with a zillion social groups, the most alluring and exotic of all: the Greek World’s sororities and fraternities. Last January I was given the honor and privilege to be part of the most renowned (and the BEST!) sorority of Puerto Rico, Eta Gamma Delta. Before I could be a part of it, the usual negative comments about sororities and fraternities were made by anyone who knew that I was interested in pledging. I decided to ignore them and discover the Greek World all by myself… and now, not only am I a part of the sorority, but it and my sisters complete me. Up next, the most common misconceptions about the Greek World:

1. “All they do is party and drink”- This is the biggest misconception of them all. While we do include the social element in our activities, we also share a big responsibility as to helping the community that surrounds us. The Greek World is not directed towards exclusion and/or elitism: we use our bond to make our community, and each other, better.

2. “You’re paying to have sisters/brothers”- Like any other social group or club, we need funds to carry on with our activities successfully. You don’t pay anyone to be your brother or sister, you pay membership dues to keep the group being active and to stay growing. The bonds you create while being in a diverse group of women are priceless

3. “They humiliate you, but then call you sister/brother”- Another huge misconception.  The pledging process is very different, depending on the sorority/fraternity you pick. The rituals, processes, and traditions are meant to make the soon-to-be member know the group they’re joining very deeply and cherish it with all their being, while learning and discovering qualities and attributes about themselves.

Being part of my sorority, my pledging process, and all the opportunities I’ve taken, next to an amazing group of strong-willed, independent and marvelous women, make up for one of the most glorious experiences I’ve had the chance to venture through. I am proud of who I am, but I am also very grateful about my sorority, since I cherish and treasure it with all my heart.

Don’t let anyone ruin your experience with misconceptions! The Greek World is amazing!
