The Secret is Out: The Best Burlington Study Spots

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVM chapter.

In the first few weeks of school there is so much going on with new students, activities and meeting new people, that studying may get lost in the mix. Luckily, there are lots of fun and cool places to study around campus or with a short walk down the hill. Here’s a guide to some of my favorite places: taking advantage of these places, however, is up to you.

               On-campus:

1.           Library

While it may be an old standby, there is a reason for that. The library has great resources and space available to study in. If you’re looking for some quiet studying, it’s important that you head up to one of the other levels besides the first. First level is mainly people chilling in between classes and groups working on homework together, though some dedicated studiers can be found as well. My suggestion: bring headphones.

2.           Outside

If this is your first year at UVM and in the Northeast, I suggest getting outside while you still can. Summers are hot and short and winters are long and cold. Getting outside now will be the anchor point that holds you here for next year. Fall in New England is shorter than summer and infinitely more beautiful. Get outside while you can because winter hits hard. The fresh air will keep you more alert than the air conditioning (or lack thereof) inside the buildings will. There are benches and plenty of space across campus that you can use.

3.           Davis Center

The Davis Center is a great place to hit because there’s everything you need. There’s food, tables with plenty of space and chairs, as well as the comfy chairs if your homework doesn’t require a tabletop to do. It’s cool and a good spot if you’re working with a group.

                  Off-campus:

1.           Muddy Waters

Let me start off with this: I LOVE MUDDY WATERS. Located on Main St, they have tea, coffee, treats and so much more. The atmosphere is cozy with low lighting and comfortable benches and tables. Their employees are awesome, and I personally recommend the cranberry oatmeal cookies (they are to die for!). It’s usually pretty quiet with a few conversations here and there, so it’s a great place to write papers with a hot drink to keep you focused and awake.
