If there is one thing I have learned from college it is being broke happens way sooner than later. Between blowing money at Chipotle and then at the bookstore because I “needed” that $58 sweatshirt, I found myself scrounging for money 24/7. Even my dad began texting me, “Get a job!” (FYI: never link your bank account with your parents). But my dad was right. I did need a job.

The problem was, I couldn’t find one. I applied for work-studies, different retail stores, and restaurants, but with my busy schedule it either didn’t work out, or I flat out didn’t even hear back.

Until one day, I was scrolling through the same Instagram posts that I already viewed countless times. But this time I saw a sponsored ad for a company named WayUp. This company advertised jobs for college students, and all I had to do was create a free account! So, I said what the h*ll, clicked the website and made an account.

Less than two days later, I had a job offer and was no longer unemployed because ya girl was hired as a WayUp campus representative!

To get a better understanding of what exactly WayUp is, and why you so many college students are using it…I’ll explain:

Who they are:WayUp is the largest online marketplace for college students to find jobs and internships. Different employment opportunities include part-time jobs during the school year, summer internships, and full-time job opportunities for graduating seniors.

What they do:Employers post jobs directly on the WayUp site, which is free for students to use. Job posting are reviewed and assessed by the WayUp team. Two unique aspects of WayUp are:

  • For Businesses: When an employer posts a job, he or she can target this job for a specific group of students, based on things like University, GPA, Major, etc. So, only qualified student candidates can apply for these jobs, let alone see the job opening.
  • For Students: WayUp calls the site “the common app for applying to jobs,” because a student only has to fill out his/her profile once, and then can just click “apply” on any job that appeals to them. Student users already know they are qualified for the job just by being able to see it!

Where they are located:Although headquarters for WayUp are in New York City, WayUp has student users at 2,574 universities and colleges across the country. Over 6,000 employers have used the site to hire students (and that’s just in the one year since launch!)

When it was created:The company launched in September 2014 by former Google employee, Liz Wessel, and former McKinsey analyst, JJ Fliegelman. The two are friends from the University of Pennsylvania. They bonded together to find a solution to the student job hunt.

Why you should sign up:Between the crazy costs of tuition, and the fact that many employers expect work or internship experience in order to review a resume for recent college graduates, students need and want to work during college. However, many students (like myself) have trouble finding work in the first place. Liz and JJ wanted to rethink how a job site should function, thus WayUp was born!

How you can sign up:Each college representative has a unique link for users to sign up. By using their link, you will be directed to a sign up portal, where all you have to do is sign up using your school username and create a password. After verifying your email, you are able to customize your profile to the best it can be by uploading a resume, pictures of yourself, past work experiences, volunteer work, and more!

The more you add, the more you’ll appeal to a future employer!
