5 Male Celebrities That Will Awaken Your Inner Feminist

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

More often than not, when we think feminist, we think woman. But that is not always the case. While feminism is built upon the idea of improving the lives of women to equalize the genders, there are countless men who support and advocate women’s rights and gender equality. Below are amazing quotes from five male celebrities that aren’t afraid to take a stance and declare themselves as feminists.

Seth Meyers

“When you work with the sort of really strong women that I work with, the idea that anyone would want to make decisions for them is hard to wrap your head around.”

Will Smith

“When asked why he let his daughter cut off all of her hair: ‘We let Willow cut her hair. When you have a little girl, it’s like how can you teach her that you’re in control of her body? If I teach her that I’m in charge of whether or not she can touch her hair, she’s going to replace me with some other man when she goes out in the world. She can’t cut my hair but that’s her hair. She has got to have command of her body. So when she goes out into the world, she’s going out with a command that is hers. She is used to making those decisions herself. We try to keep giving them those decisions until they can hold the full weight of their lives.’

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

“We would always watch Lakers games as a family, but my mom would always point out every time the cheerleaders came on, ’OK, so look, here’s the story that gets told: The men get to be the heroic skilled athletes and the women just get to be pretty. She wanted me and my brother to be aware of it because we see these images on TV, in the movies, and in magazines all the time. And if you don’t stop and think about it, it just sort of seeps into your brain and that becomes the way you perceive reality.”

Prince Harry

“We know that when women are empowered, they immeasurably improve the lives of everyone around them—their families, their communities and their countries.”

Ryan Gosling

“I’m attracted to films that have strong female characters because there are strong female characters in my life.”
