10 Essential Lessons Old Disney Channel Taught Me

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Xavier chapter.

1. Racism is still an issue.

In the episode, “True Colors,” Raven and Chelsea both apply for a job at Sassez. Raven outperforms Chelsea, completing her interview perfectly. However, Chelsea is the one that gets the job. Raven then gets a vision of the store manager saying that she does not hire black people.

2. You don’t have to be skinny to be beautiful.

In the Lizzie McGuire episode “Inner Beauty,” Miranda develops an eating disorder because she believes that she is fat and that her life is out of her control. After talking to her friends about it, both Lizzie and Gordo reassure her that she is perfect the way she is and she doesn’t need to change.

3. Anybody can save the world and that includes teenage girls.

Kim Possible does the impossible: she gets the grades, is on the cheerleading team, and saves the world. Kim proves that everyone has the power and the ability to do anything they set their mind to.

 4. Accept everyone from every culture.

In the episode, “Culture Shock,” Penny’s teacher gives them an assignment to spend time in their classmates’ homes in order to understand different nationalities.

5. There is no color in friendship.

In the movie The Color of Friendship, a white South African girl befriends a black family in America. Although they do not get along in the beginning, the girls begin to understand each other’s different cultures and develop a friendship that lasts a lifetime.

6. Women can play any sport.

In the episode “She’s Got Game,” Penny Proud tries out for the football team only to be denied by the coach because she is a girl. That doesn’t stop Penny as she preserves and makes her football debut.

7. Family is invaluable…

Family is important; they will always be there for you through thick and thin and will help you with every situation that you’re going through.

8. … and friends are also.

Friends are invaluable, regardless of what you get each other into. Whether you’re creating mischief or trying to clean up the mess you started, your friends will always have your back and be there for you.

9. You’ll make mistakes…

In the episode, “To See or Not to See,” Eddie has to climb a rock wall; even though he is scared, Raven reassures him that he makes it to the top. Feeling confident, Eddie goes into gym class ready to climb the wall. He barely makes it off the ground, and he is humiliated in front of everyone.

 10. … but be yourself.

Most of the most important lessons that Disney Channel taught us was to be ourselves even if people don’t like us. Collegiettes, it is so much better to be unique and be ourselves than a poor imitation of somebody else.
