10 Things to Thank Your Older Brother For

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

You love them, you hate them—they’re your big brothers.  Growing up with them was nothing short of an interesting experience, but you wouldn’t change it for the world.  After all, they’ve helped shape you into the person you are today.  Regardless of the ups and downs that the two of you have endured, there’s definitely a lot to be thankful for.

1. For not getting mad when I raided your closet.  I don’t think I’ve ever had to buy my own sweatshirts- or had to shop in the men’s department to get the perfect one.  Also, no, you’re not getting any of them back.

2. For making me laugh through the hardest times. Not that I’m the hardest person to make laugh, but you never gave up until I smiled, and that means more than you know.

3. For paving the way with mom and dad. Here’s to you for being the test dummy and “breaking in” the rules and curfews.  And for covering for me (as I did for you) when we broke them.

4. For making me listen to good music.  The Jonas Brothers phase was rough, but continuously blasting your music over mine made me realize Radio Disney was just temporary.

5. For teaching me responsibility.Whether it was how to handle a certain teacher’s assignments, or how to party responsibly, you’ve always had the best advice.

6. For being a personal bodyguard. “Hey that’s my sister” is not always my favorite thing to hear you say, but sometimes it’s much needed.

7. For making sure I was sport-educated. Even when I didn’t care, watching and understanding exactly what was going on during every game paid off in the long run.

8. For telling me when I make a bad decision.  Even if I didn’t listen the first ten times, thank you for sticking by me until I realized the stupidity in some of my decisions.  (Please, continue to do this, I promise I’ll learn someday.)

9. For never allowing a dull moment together.  Whether it was playing games when we were young, or reminiscing now, thanks for keeping every day exciting.

10. For never giving up on me. It hasn’t always been easy but thank you for sticking by me no matter what and for always being there to lean on.
