How to Avoid Being “That Person”

For students, the “holidays” can be a joyous time of fun, relaxation and the occasional (although brief) study sessions. Though amidst all this festive fun, there is one time honoured tradition among students or other young adults. That tradition is partying, from the thanksgiving get-togethers to the several Halloween block parties or bashes, I’m sure many people have seen the wild parties depicted in several critically acclaimed collage movies. Now during this time of blissful youth it’s always good to go out and enjoy yourself, but it’s also good to plan ahead. Remember, you never want to be known as “that person” at the party. Here are a couple of suggestions to avoid being put in that position.

Know whose party you’re attending

It’s always good to have details about the area or house you’re going to be rocking out at for an extended period of time. I’m not saying you need to become a private investigator about this person or their friends, but make sure you can get a general idea of where you will be and make sure to tell others just in case you hit that dreaded worst case scenario.

Travel in packs

Well, you may not want to bring the whole “squad’ out for a night but remember you never want to go by yourself.  It is acceptable to only have one person with you, but know the situation you could be in. Also remember to keep track of all the people you came with, even if you haven’t been in that situation, everyone would find it annoying when you want to leave and you can’t find all your friends.  There is always strength in numbers.

Watch your beverage

Be vigilant with all your drinks. Though you may know many or most of the people at the party, there might be a few that you  don’t know. Be smart with your beverages. Don’t let your drink get out of your sight, and if you do lose it somewhere, always get a new one.

Another point about drinking at a party is don’t get super drunk

This point is a pretty straightforward one, as more than likely, there is bound to be booze at the party. Getting super wasted or inebriated is not only unwanted but also a tad unhealthy.  Hangovers can be problematic in many ways, it could hurt you not only by a headache but maybe by hindering your performance at an activity the next day ( e.g., class or maybe a family event). Finally, no one likes to be the one the that needs to be taken care of at the end of the night.

Always make sure you have a ride home

This is one of the most crucial points in this piece, always know your DD or have the finances to get you home. It’s good to hash these plans out prior to going to your party, but if worst comes to worst make sure you either have a designated driver (a friend) or a cab ride home.  By following these simple steps, it can be easy to stay safe and not be remembered as “that person” at the holiday events.
