Album Review: Demi Lovato is Confident

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePaul chapter.

Demi Lovato has finally embraced her curves and badass capability after her widely publicized struggle with mental illness and substance abuse. While her journey of overcoming began back in 2010 when she admitted herself into rehab, she has finally reached a sense of self acceptance. This, she reveals in her fifth studio album “Confident” which was released this past Friday.  Making not only a proclamation to the world of her recent shedding of insecurity, but a statement to all that imperfections should be cherished and that only in self acceptance and appreciation can you reach your full potential. Something of which, Lovato has accomplished in her compilation of sure to be hits, finally capturing her breathtaking vocal range. Featuring well known rappers Iggy Azalea and Sirah, ‘Confident,’ though classified as a pop album, is infused with an undertone of R&B and reverts, in part, back to her rock ‘n’ roll roots. No longer attempting to emulate a sound that the world will adhere to, Lovato forges her own that attracts listeners from all genres and areas of the world.

Though, as she promised to her Lovatics, just five years ago, she has been ‘maturing not changing.’ Thus she did not stray from her commitment to releasing heart wrenching, honest ballads, opening up once more about all that she has been through. From her estranged relationship with her abusive father to her emotional relationship struggles of seeing her love move on. She also reflects upon her own personal growth and dedication to sobriety and self improvement in her empowering track, ‘Old Ways.’ Nonetheless she includes upbeat, contagious anthems such as ‘Confident,’ ‘Stars’ and ‘Yes,’ releasing not only her own, but every listener’s, inner badass.

There is nothing more contagious than Lovato’s new found self confidence, check out her album, ‘Confident,’ on Spotify or purchase it on iTunes, Amazon or her website.
