5 Things About Autumn That Everyone Complains About (But Secretly Likes)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFU chapter.

Autumn marks the end of summer. It also marks the transition from summer to winter, if you live in a place where it’s already snowing. This is the season where we embrace the rain, watch the leaves fall, and stay at home so we can sip our hot cups of coffee. But there are things that everyone complains about when this season rolls around, even though they secretly like these things!

1. The season itself

Everyone knows that summer is obviously the best season out there. The sun is constantly hitting your face, you’re going on vacation, the weather is warm, and you don’t have to worry about the cold. When September rolls around, it starts to get cold, rainy and wet. No one likes that type of weather! But…think about sweater weather. Think about those fall colors, the leaves, the hot drinks, and the baked goods. The transition period from summer to autumn is the best. It’s not too hot or too cold. It’s literally the perfect weather.

2. Pumpkin madness

What’s the deal with putting pumpkin in everything anyways? Is pumpkin really that good? If you cut one open and eat it, it’s not even that great! But why is it that when we put it in everything, it’s automatically delicious?  I mean, take a look at the Pumpkin Spice Latte. It’s super popular and everyone is drinking it. Okay, I’ll admit that the Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks is pretty good. It’s everything you think autumn is, but in the form of a hot beverage.

3. Christmas décor in November

When the clock hits 12:00 a.m. on November 1st, we are suddenly bombarded with Christmas decorations. Everywhere you go, you see Christmas decorations. If you work at the mall, you definitely know what I’m talking about. The day after Halloween, Christmas décor popped up at the local mall! What the heck? But deep down, we are all secretly excited for all that Christmas décor. As much as I am annoyed at the Christmas decorations popping up, I secretly like it. We’re already making our Christmas playlists and belting out that Michael Bublé Christmas album in preparation. Or maybe not. Maybe it’s just me.

4. Bath & Body Works scents

If you have ever walked past a Bath & Body Works store, you probably inhale every scent that is coming from their store and want to choke because they are so strong. However, when autumn rolls around, they put out all Christmas and winter-related scents. This makes you want to run into the store and smell all the candles, soaps, and fragrances they have. I mean, have you smelled their Salted Caramel and Cinnamon Caramel Swirl candles? They’re the bomb! And it makes me sad, because I want to buy all of them.

5. Snow?

Living in British Columbia (specifically Metro Vancouver), we complain about EVERYTHING. Snow is something we don’t get, but once it starts to trickle down, it is the worst thing ever! Apparently, we can’t handle a tiny bit of snow. Deep down, everyone knows they love a bit of snow. I mean, who doesn’t want to go out and start a snowball fight up on campus? Maybe make some snow angels too!

In all seriousness though, no one is going to judge you if you’re jamming to Christmas music during autumn or if you’re already putting up your Christmas decorations. People will only judge if you’re doing this in July. We should embrace what this season brings us: the beautiful colors, falling leaves, and yes, even the Pumpkin Spice Lattes.
