When you’re 39,000 feet in the air and too much of a broke college kid to pay for the airplane wifi, you have to find entertainment in something other than social media.
Read a book
Read something for pleasure. A flight is the perfect excuse to indulge in a teen-romance-novel-turned-into-a-major-motion-picture that comes out in the spring.
Take Instagram-worthy cloud pictures
Once you have service you’ll get so many likes for being the well-travelled person you are.
Watch the movie the airplane is playing
Maybe it’s something you’ve seen before, maybe it’s something made before you were conceived, but maybe it’s worth it.
Download games on your phone/tablet/laptop before take-off
A lot of games on cell phones don’t require data to play, just to run their ads. Spend your time training your brain with Sudoku, or get really frustrated with some Crossy Road.
Upload movies or music onto your phone/tablet/laptop before you board
Relatively anything that you don’t need to use wifi to stream — don’t forget headphones!
Plan out your break
Time out lunches with high school friends, trips to your favorite hometown shops and restaurants, and quality family time.
Make small-talk with the people around you
You might actually learn something interesting about a random stranger you will probably never see again.
Rehearse what you’ll say to relatives at Thanksgiving dinner
Practice the best way to answer: “What’s your major?” “What kind of job can you get with that degree?” “Are you working?” “Do you have friends?”
Get ahead on class assignments and reading
This will give you more time to relax over break. Your biggest distraction (the internet) isn’t nagging you for once.
Catch up on sleep
Your dreams are enough entertainment.
