She’s a Babe: Gargi Purohit ’19

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

When she isn’t studying in The Pen or hanging out in LaFun, freshman Gargi Purohit can be seen rushing around campus to get involved in a variety of activities. Just in case you’ve seen her whiz by you a few times, here are some things that will help you get to know her!

The Basics

Hometown: New York City!

Dorm: Breen-Phillips: Home of the Babes

Intended Major: Economics and Political Science with (possibly) a minor in Theatre

Class: 2019

Relationship Status: Single and ready to mingle like a Pringle

The Notre Dame Edition

How did you hear about ND? Why did you choose to come here?

First of all, I’m undocumented. That played a big role in my college decision. Notre Dame knew of my immigration status and helped me in more ways than one. Also, everyone I have met here is so nice. When talking to the higher-ups and upperclassmen, I never get that “superior” impression. Everyone is just so nice and willing to help!

First impression of midwesterners?

Everyone here is so nice and relaxed and will hold the door open for someone that is twenty feet away. I am still in shock.

Are there any benefits to being in the South Bend area as opposed to living in NYC?

Clean air. I walk around the lakes frequently and take many deep breaths. If I did that back home, I would inhale some toxic fume and die.

Why are you interested in Economics and Political Science?

My ultimate dream is to be an Ambassador for America in the United Nations. I have no idea how to get there but I know that I have always wanted to be involved in the government. I also took a Microeconomics class last semester and loved it!

Favorite…

Study spot?

Anywhere quiet with a desk and multiple outlets. And close to food, of course.

Food from LaFun?

My friends Victoria and Kassidy are my TacoHut buddies. We always go to TacoHut and I order a Crunch Wrap Supreme with fried beans instead of beef with added guacamole (I’m a vegetarian).

Starbucks drink?

Cool Lime Refresher with no water and no ice.

Book?

Oh god no. I can’t choose. I have so many favorites!

Genre of music and/or band/artist?

I love all kinds of music but my one favorite type is instrumental. For example, “Arrival of The Birds” is my go-to song.

Deeper thoughts

What do you think about the diversity on campus?

I think that it can definitely be improved. The first couple of days and weeks were difficult because I felt very isolated. Many times, I am the only Indian in the room. One thing I am happy to see is how open my classmates are to understanding different viewpoints and perspectives.

What makes someone American?

To be frank, I don’t know. I know the general definition is someone who is born here and grows up here. But I also think that the definition should include someone who wasn’t born here but came here at a very young age and grew up in one of the greatest cities in America. :)

And now, the ultimate question…

NDH or SDH?

Whichever one I’m closer to.

And there you have it. Next time you see her in Starbucks, be sure to say hello!

¡Hola! I'm Victoria Erdel, a sophomore Sociology major and TESOL minor at the University of Notre Dame. I've lived in Portugal and Indiana, and I occasionally visit my family in Ecuador. I can't wait to expand my interests in college. I enjoy writing (obviously), reading, and eating.  Go Irish!
