What happens when you combine a tire manufacturer, world-renowned photographers and inspirational female icons? The 2016 Pirelli Calendar!
The Pirelli Calendar is known for its scandalous, NSFW images. Models and actresses alike covet spots on it’s famous pages. Names like Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Gisele Bündchen, Penélope Cruz, Hilary Swank and Gigi Hadid have previously graced the calendar, but this year there are new names taking center stage.
Annie Leibovitz, who has previously photographed the 2000 calendar, casted and photographed the 2016 publication, giving this year’s calendar a completely new image. Leibovitz opted to take portraits of inspiring writers, artists, benefactors, and athletes, celebrating the strength of women in every aspect of society.
The calendar will feature Serena Williams, Amy Schumer, Patti Smith, Yoko Ono, Tavi Gevinson, Fran Lebowitz, Natalia Vodianova, Kathleen Kennedy, Yao Chen, Mellody Hobson, Ava DuVernay, Shirin Neshat and Agnes Gund, along with her granddaughter Sadie Rain Hope-Gund.
“I still can’t believe the women who agreed to do it, did it,” Leibovitz said in a press conference. “It shouldn’t be a big step, but it is a big step.” This year’s calendar is also stylistically different due to the inclusion of paragraphs under the images highlighting each woman’s accomplishments. After viewing the images, and behind the scenes footage we couldn’t be more ecstatic for these innovative women to be applauded for their outstanding achievements.
