Whether you are pro-life or pro-choice, it does not really matter to me. As a woman, what matters to me is that I get to choose at all. I think most of us see decisions like that as having a big gray area between right and wrong. It is easy to defend a side when you are removed from the situation, but I cannot say for certain what I would do if put in the impossible position of actually making that choice. All I know for certain is how lucky I am that it is my choice to make.

With recent events like the Colorado shooting of a Planned Parenthood, it is imperative to keep this in mind. Even though there is still progress to be made, gender equality has come so far from the time of our grandparents, or even parents. I have rights available to me today that my grandmother never would have dreamed. Things like college and a career, things that are a given to me, would not have been in the past. It is so simple for me to take these choices for granted, and I really should not. Even in 2015, not everyone is given the same freedom of choice that I often presume everyone receives.

There are still places in the world where girls never get to go to school, and I spend a lot of days complaining about having to go to school. It seems like a fundamental part of my rights, and in an ideal world, it would be a fundamental right everywhere. Hopefully someday that will change, but today I will remind myself how lucky I am to have a world of opportunity. I live in a world of choice and freedom. Not every woman can say that.
