What You Should be Doing Over Winter Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Winter break is just around the corner, and while it seems like it will last forever, it will be spring semester just before you know it. While winter break is the perfect time to take advantage of free laundry, home-cooked meals, and family festivities, there are a few other things you should be doing during vacation.

1. Work on your resume

The few weeks of winter break is the prefect time to do some “housekeeping” and doing the paperwork you’ve put off all semester. Getting your resume updated (or started) is a perfect cold winter day activity. Make some cocoa and sit down and get it done. It will go faster than you think. If you’re feeling really ambitious, also start on a cover letter template so that applying for jobs and internships during the year will be quick and painless.

2. Order your books for next semester

Get a jump-start on the semester and look at your assigned reading list. You’ll feel ahead of the game when you come back in January and all your books are here waiting for you. It is also the perfect time to search for books that other students are selling to try and save some cash.

3. Start looking for summer internships/jobs (Yes, already.)

Now that your resume is good to go, start planning what is going to occupy your time come summer vacation. Whether you need a part-time job, an internship, or a volunteer opportunity, companies fill their spots quickly and begin interviewing early on. Having your plans set will reduce stress during the semester when you have papers and tests to worry about.

4. Enjoy your time off and recharge

Most importantly, use this time off to relax and get rested before classes start again. Take advantage of the time you get to spend with friends and family and sleep in occasionally. Come back in January ready to take on the new semester!
