How to Survive Your 21st birthday

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

Alright, soon to be legal collegiettes, we know your 21st birthday is coming up and we want you to make the most of it. Celebrating the big two-one is rather infamous for the embarrassing stories. Her Campus Bryant is here to give you a successful 21st celebration, minus the blackout.

Mix in a water

Staying hydrated throughout the night will be super important for keeping you lively and enjoying your 21st. After every few drinks, try to get a water in between from the bartender. If you’re feeling pressure from your friends to drink, having a glass of water in your hand can easily be mistaken for a drink. This way you get people off your back about drinking more, and stay hydrated at the same time.

Eat

Most definitely treat yourself to a nice dinner before going out to help soak up the alcohol. Also feel free to eat while you’re out too- it is your birthday, splurging is totally allowed.

Pace yourself

Try to avoid shooting down five shots in a row with all your friends. After all, you do have the rest of your life to take shots. If need be, just pretend you’re taking a shot and throw it behind your back.

Celebrate with trustworthy friends

You most likely will celebrate with all your good friends anyhow, but for a 21st birthday it’s very important to celebrate with the people you’re closest to. Make sure that you can rely on those celebrating with you. In case anything does happen, they will be there to help you through.

Know your limits

We think it’s pretty safe to say that a majority of the people have drank a sip or two of alcohol before they are fully legal. Whether you have or not, try to stay aware of how you’re feeling. If you feel like you’re getting slightly out of your comfort zone then it’s totally okay to voice yourself and tell your friends you don’t want to drink anymore.

Pick a drink and stick to it

This is something that usually gets people the most when they go out. As exciting as it is to try all the drinks there are in the world, be smart. You have the rest of your life to try different kinds of liquor, but to survive your 21st be sure to stick to one kind and enjoy that for the rest of the night.

Don’t pregame

We here at Her Campus Bryant know that people tell you to skip this for Around the World weekend, and that you most likely don’t listen. Trust us when we say this is something to be avoided on your 21st. Don’t worry too much about the money saving aspect of the pregame, people will be buying you drinks all night.

Have Fun!

Despite some of the horrific 21st stories you may have heard, know that it’s totally okay to let yourself loose for the night. After all, the best stories usually begin with a bit of alcohol. Enjoy legality girls, and happy drinking!
