What College Students Actually Want in a Care Package

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

There is no greater feeling than checking the mail and finding a care package from your beloved family members back home. College students receiving care packages is equivalent to little kids opening presents on Christmas morning… that is until we realize that although the gesture was nice, there is nothing useful or wanted inside and end up giving out the items to our friends. Here are five things college students actually want to receive in a care package.

1. Gift Cards

Because our shopping and hunger needs depend on them.

2. Home Baked Goodies

For the times that we get a little homesick for Mom’s cooking, and for that time in the quarter where everything else becomes absolutely repulsive.

3. Toiletries

Because nothing sucks more than getting in the shower and realizing you are all out of shampoo, your razor blade is dull, and your toothbrush is disgusting… and then having to go out and be an adult and buy them yourself.

4. School Supplies

We are in school for 4 (hopefully) years, we can never have too many school supplies. Plus, we will be way happier when we receive them in a care package rather than waiting in a ridiculous line at the bookstore during midterm and finals week.

5. Money

I think this one is a given…

Lily is a senior at UC Santa Barbara studying Communication and Education. She loves making lists, minimalism, public media, and breakfast foods. Her planner is her best friend.
Kirby is a recent graduate from UCSB currently living in Los Angeles. As a proud Her Campus UCSB alum, she's happy to be back on the HC team covering one of her fave shows: "The Mindy Project." On any given day you can find her with her nose in a book (let's be real - it's a Kindle). In her free time, she likes petting dogs, binge-watching TV, and eating a lot of food. Find her on Instagram: @kirbynicoleb or @GirlBossEats.
