Letter to The Right One at The Wrong Time

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

I want you to know it was never you. Time was just never in our favor.

I guess part of me wonders what it would have been like if we stuck through all the struggles that life throws at us being this age. Would we have made it if we tried hard enough?

I am happy you know, sometimes I do laugh almost to the point of tears when I am with my friends enjoying all the freedoms college brings. The problem is, when I am alone I find myself lost in the memories we once shared. I find myself smiling uncontrollably over all the movie dates, spontaneous trips and family parties.

Would we have made it?

The answer is no. Life has a way of making sure that everything works out when it is supposed to, not when you necessarily want it to.

I knew in my heart that I was in love with you, but time thought otherwise. Timing at the end of the day is everything. All great love stories use time as the way of joining the most unlikely couples. I cannot remember the last romance movie I saw that did not bring the two lead actors together with a quick glance as they crossed the street or bought coffee.

You just came to me too early.

You and I were just another postponed college love story. Just look at the place we are in our lives. Could you have given up all the late night with friends just to watch endless hours of Netflix? Balancing your boys/girls is not easy these days.

We went from being inseparable to total strangers in just one breath. How weird is that? Someone you pictured a future with is now out living their carefree college life with other people. The crazy thing is, is that it happens every second of every day to couples everywhere.

Timing was not for us and so we did not stand a chance. You were kind and we wanted the same things for our future. The problem is, how can you already picture a future together when the present was tearing you apart?

We made that mistake early on.

We pictured where we would live and the jobs we would have, but those were all fantasies. College is the time to figure out where we want to be. However, you may change your mind close to a few hundred times before you get that diploma. Do you even remember what your first major was when you got here? I sure don’t.

Now is the time for change.

I was not the same person I was at fifteen and surely not the same person I was at eighteen, let alone who I now am at twenty. So what made me think you and I would want the same thing when we got into our careers?

Once you graduate college the world becomes this giant playground of opportunity. At least that is what every student paying thousands hopes for. How likely would it have been that we ended up in the same city? Or would one of us had to have given up their dream for love?

Who knows. maybe one day when the clock strikes twelve you will come chasing after me again. But until then, I hope time treats you well.
