Why You Should Definitely Add Galentine’s Day to Your Calendar

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

No, I did not spell “Valentine’s” wrong. You read it right. Galentine’s Day is a real thing and whether your Facebook status is “single,” “in a relationship” or “it’s complicated,” anyone can participate.

Galentine’s Day is celebrated on February 13th, the day before Valentine’s Day. It’s a day about “celebrating lady friends” according to the legendary character from Parks and Recreation, Leslie Knope.

You and your friends can get as into it as much as you like. Some groups of friends might take it as light as going to brunch at their favorite local café, whereas other groups of friends might take it as far as going skydiving together. Whatever floats your boat! As long as everyone is having good time, celebrating each other’s awesomeness, and making memories, you’re doing it right.

Gift exchanges are a must! Not only are they fun, but having a memento of your perfect Galentine’s Day is a nice way to remind you of how #blessed you are for such amazing friends. Whether you like to craft, shop, or explore DIY projects, bring a gift that your friend can keep forever! You can get as creative, cheesey and lovey as you want, or go the opposite direction and do a “white elephant” style and bring the weirdest thing you can find at the dollar store.

Romantic relationships are fun and having a day of the year to celebrate love is awesome, but why shouldn’t we also take a day to appreciate friends!? Start making Galentine’s Day a tradition and hopefully, one day, it will also become a national holiday.

So if you’re one of those people who become mopey and sad about being single on Valentines Day, it is time to turn that frown upside down. Get out of bed, turn off your Netflix, and put on some pants because Galentine’s Day has come to the rescue.
