“Looking for a really dramatic point:” Harold Holzer, Abraham Lincoln, and Freedom of the Press

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gettysburg chapter.

On Tuesday, February 23, renowned historian Harold Holzer, recipient of the prestigious 2015 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln prize, gave the annual Lincoln Lyceum address to a group of students, staff, and community members.

Introduced by the Civil War Institute’s Dr. Ian A. Isherwood, Holzer effortlessly discussed the topics of his book Lincoln and the Power of the Press:  The War for Public Opinion.  Against a backdrop of Civil War-era censorship, he led the crowd to think not only of the history, but of the modern equivalents thereof.
