Open Letter To My Little Sister Who I Raised

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pace chapter.

Dear Little Sis,

When I look at you, I see how much you have grown. You are no longer that little baby who I used to put to sleep. Even though you are only nine years old, you act like you are an adult. You have your own opinions and can fend for yourself! You are stubborn and can be a brat, but I still imagine the little girl who I used to watch every single day after school whenever I look at you.

It still amazes me how you cry every time that I go back to school. I always wished that one day you would get used to the fact that I had to go back, but now I take back my wish. After 3 years it shows me how much I mean to you. Mom tells me how much you talk about me to your teachers and friends! I hope that I make you proud!

You remind me so much of myself. You like all of the same things I do and your mannerisms are the same as mine! As you go through life, I will always be your guide, a helping hand, and your therapist. I will always be there to listen and have some awesome sleepovers! Now that I am about to finish my junior year, I like to believe that I have some knowledge about life. So, I want to tell you a few things that I wish I knew growing up that I learned in college.

1. Not everyone needs to be your friend: I spent most of my life trying to please other people to be my friend. I learned that it is ok to just have a few AMAZING friends and not a bunch of acquaintances. As you grow up, popularity seems to be everything, but it is not. It’s the few best friends that matter the most!

2. Put 110% into everything that you do: Hard work is good work! You aren’t going to be good at everything, but when you do try something new, put in 110%! If you work hard at something that you aren’t good at, it will make you work just as hard when it is something that you do well in.

3. Just shake off the haters: They are going to be people who are going to spread rumors, are jealous, and try to upset you. All I can say is the amazing words that T-Swift lives by is “Shake It Off.” You don’t need them and they don’t deserve you because you are an amazing person inside and out.

4. Not being perfect is okay: No one is perfect! I know it seems that you have to strive to be the best at EVERYTHING, but it is not possible. Why stress yourself out when you can be content with just being you? You is perfect in your own way!

5. Binge watching Netflix is LIFE: Netflix is a way of life and you may watch as much of it as you want! Don’t listen to mom when she says that you watch too much TV! It is all a lie!

I hope that you take my advice into consideration and that you always remember that you are loved! I know you won’t remember the amazing memories that we had when you were little, but I always will. I can’t wait to watch you grow up and eventually go to college!

HCXO,
