11 Reasons Why You Should Come to College of Charleston

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C of C chapter.

For anyone who is trying to decide where the heck to go to college, consider College of Charleston! Anyone who already goes to CofC will tell you how great this school is. And they’re right! There are SO MANY amazing things about CofC that might just be enough to convince you to come here. And we’re not being biased at all.

1. Charleston

CofC’s campus is located in downtown Charleston, SC, which has been voted the #1 city in the United States for the past three years and #5 in the world by Conde Nast Traveler readers. Charleston is one of the most beautiful and charming cities in the world with it’s historical architecture, friendly locals, and coastal location, so it’s no surprise that so many people are attracted to the city.

2. Campus is beautiful

With everything about Charleston’s charm and beauty being said, obviously, CofC’s campus is just as gorgeous! There’s so much history built into most of the college’s buildings that it’s impossible to find an unattractive spot on campus.

3. The weather is always perfect

Because of Charleston’s southern and coastal location, it’s always fairly warm. Winter never gets too harsh. Spring and fall are perfectly warm and sunny. Even though Charleston gets pretty hot in the summer, most students don’t stay on campus for the entire summer anyway.

4. The beach

If you are in Charleston during the summer, the beach is just 20 minutes away! And since the weather is so nice all the time it’s beach weather for almost the whole year!

5. Shopping

College of Charleston’s campus is only one block away from King Street, where the prime shopping takes place in Charleston. Student favorite stores like Forever 21, H&M, and Urban Outfitters are all within walking distance. Just avoid going shopping instead of going to class.

6. Movies and TV shows

The number of movies and tv shows filmed either on campus or not far from it is large and growing. The Notebook, Dear John, The Patriot, Army Wives, and The Today Show, just to name a few, have all been filmed, at least in part, either somewhere on CofC’s campus, or in various areas downtown.

7. Celebrity Sightings

Because so many things are filmed in the area, and because it’s such an attractive city, it’s not uncommon to spot a celebrity wandering around downtown. Some of your favorite celebrities that have been seen near campus are Jesse McCartney, Cam Gigandet, Will Smith, and Bill Murray. And who can forget the Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively wedding at Boone Plantation, not far from the downtown area!

8. Cougar Pride

CofC may not have a football team, but our spirit at basketball games and other sports on campus makes up for it. Clyde the cougar may even visit your classes to let you know there’s a big game coming up!

9. Fun activities on campus

There’s always something going on at CofC. You can go see a play put on by the theater department, or go to a free classical music concert every Monday night by the music department. Many other events on campus are put on by CAB, or the Cougar Activities Board, which is an organization on campus that plans events like open mic nights, dance marathon, and even free movies. Some of the movies, such as Catching Fire and Thor: The Dark World, have been shown outside on campus on a large screen, which is a super fun experience that lets you enjoy both the movie, and the beautiful areas on campus. These are only a few of the many fun activities at CofC!

10. Make connections for your career

College of Charleston is a liberal arts college, which means you will graduate with a wide variety of skills that will prepare you for your future job. It also means that while you attend CofC, you will have the chance to get an internship and make connections that will help you ease into your career after graduation. Charleston is like a mini New York City, so there are countless opportunities at your fingertips.

11. Did we mention the beautiful campus?
