Five Shows You Should Be Binge Watching
Growing tired of re-watching Parks and Rec in between episodes of Fuller House? Here are some options that will slowly take over your life, as they have mine.
1. House of Cards
You think you know what goes on in the White House? Think again. This drama starring Kevin Spacey as congressman Francis Underwood alongside Robin Wright as his wife, Claire, reveals the dirty underside to politics in a fictitious situation. If you’re into strong monologues, heated arguments, and peering into the minds of powerful folks, this is for you. Beware: This show is rated Mature for a REASON.
2. Portlandia
Keeping Portland weird is Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen’s specialty. A series of short skits throughout each episode, this television show nods its head to all walks of life through dramatizing the stereotypes associated with them. Feminists? Check. Homeless people? Check. Middle-aged couple trying to revive their youth? Checkity-check. The writing is dry, making small quips watchers may miss if they don’t listen. This show is now completing its sixth season on IFC, and will be ending in the eighth season.
3. Bates Motel
One word: PSYCHO. A new-age rendition of a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s famous horror film, Norman Bates and his mother, Norma use iPhones and run their motel amidst a town run by an underground drug ring, which finds its way into the plot early in the first season. Corruption, killing, and Oedipus complexes are the specialties of this successful A&E series. Season 3 was recently put on Netflix, so watch away!
4. Grace and Frankie
With Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterson starring, how could this show lose? That’s the real question. Fonda and Tomlin, who play Grace and Frankie, are rivals who show up to dinner to meet their husbands, who they expect are going to announce their retirement from a law firm, which they have worked at together for two decades. To their surprise, the men announce an entirely different partnership—one that is built on the love they have for one another. Divorced publicly, the women end up going to their co-owned beach house and working out their hurt over their homosexual exes together. Be prepared to feel all of the feelings.
5. Jessica Jones
I’ve only just started this show, but I am already hooked. Marvel Comic-based, Jessica Jones, played by Krysten Ritter, is a super-strong alcoholic with her own private investigating business. She has her mind set on destroying her ex-captor, Kilgrave, another ‘gifted’ man with the power of mind control, making his subjects do horrific things against their will. Fans of Doctor Who will be pleased to know that Kilgrave is played by none other than David Tennant, making frequent appearances.
