Fabulous Freshman: Michael Herbert Greenblatt

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

For freshman communications and theater major Mikey Greenblatt, acting is not just a hobby… it’s a way of life.

As a member of Erasable Inc., a UMD improv comedy group, and Maryland’s Filmmakers club, Greenblatt has been able to make acting a daily routine.

“If you ever see a bunch of adults cursing at each other on McKeldin, it is most likely Erasable Inc. warming up for a show,” he said.

Though he spends most of his time in character, Greenblatt is known by his peers as someone who always remains true to himself.

“On the surface, Mikey might seem like a goofy character, but once you get to know him, you realize he’s much more than that. One trait that embodies Mikey is his genuineness,” Greenblatt’s roommate Jamie Herszaft said. “He always sticks to his morals, while balancing humor in his life.”

While many actors have dreams of acquiring fame and fortune, Greenblatt acts for different reasons.

“I act because it is what I can do best; it is all I can see myself doing, whether that is acting in Hollywood or in a small community theater in Buford, Wyoming,” he said. “When I play a poor or wealthy person I am able to feel their conflicts, I can further understand their hopes and dreams. Playing other people helps me further understand myself and those around me.”

Greenblatt’s greatest inspiration for his own acting is the famed actor Dustin Hoffman.

“I was so impressed by his performance that I went through a six month Rain Man phase. I digress, but it was Mr. Hoffman who turned me on to the magic of film and theater,” he said.

Greenblatt’s passions don’t end with acting, though. He also enjoys playing sports, especially volleyball.

“I’ve considered myself a ‘sportster’ ever since the days of sitting in the outfield and eating the grass,” he said.

In terms of his career goals, Greenblatt maintains a sense of positivity and humor for whatever the future holds.

“It’s a good thing I’m a communications and a theater major, that way if I’m not able to make it in the public relations world, I can just become a famous actor,” he said.

As a funny, compassionate, and sporty guy, Greenblatt is definitely quite the catch. And he’s single, ladies!
