11 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Sigma Chi

You’ve likely seen the old gold and blue letters around campus, but what you probably don’t know is what’s behind those letters.

1. The Bryant University chapter is a nationally ranked chapter!

Sigma Chi at Bryant University (Lambda Eta chapter) has received at least one Blue Peterson in each year of its existence. This award places Bryant University’s Sigma Chi among the top 20% of chapters globally! In 2014, Bryant University Sigma Chi was the #2 ranked chapter in North America!

2. They have their own investment portfolio

Named after the first treasurer in Sigma Chi history, William Lewis Lockwood, the Lockwood Investment Fund is a team of six brothers led by senior Evan DaSilva. Bryant is the first Sigma Chi chapter in the nation to start an active investment fund run by its brothers in order to fund leadership conferences and fraternal events.

3. Each brother is involved in something else other than Greek Life

We are involved in over 50 different organizations on campus!

4. Sigma Chi hosts the largest Greek leadership conference in the world

Hosted at a given university chosen every year, Balfour Leadership Training Workshop hosts 2,000+ Sigma Chi’s from across the country for five days. Facilitated by alumni volunteers and sponsored by alumni donors, Balfour is filled with leadership training, individual chapter strategic planning, networking, social topic issues, special guests, intramural tournaments, and more.

5. The Bryant University chapter hosted the CT/RI Sigma Chi Regional Conference – The largest conference in the world!

Sigma Chi chapters across the globe are organized into regions. Each year, a new chapter hosts the regional conference. Bryant Sigma Chi hosted seven chapters, 250+ undergraduates, and 40+ alumni in January 2016. This conference was filled with leadership workshops, philanthropic initiatives, chapter development, networking, and “senior boot camp” for postgraduate preparation.

7. Sigma Chi Headquarters invests millions of dollars each year into the entire organization

Sigma Chi is run entirely through a vast network of alumni volunteers, totaling at a $27.62 million Endowment from alumni donations. In turn, this money is given back through scholarships and leadership programming, such as Balfour Leadership Training Workshop, Horizons Huntsman Leadership Summit, Sigma Chi Lifeline (a suicide prevention program), and Sigma Chi U (an online learning program).

8. They have raised over $50,000 from Derby Days!

Derby Days is an amazing philanthropic, team event hosted at Bryant University to raise money for the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Every dollar raised for Huntsman goes directly to research. This year alone, the Bryant chapter has raised $7,000 and the week has not even started yet!

9. Sigma Chi has a strict no hazing policy

In 2005, a national Zero-Tolerance Hazing policy was established. Sigma Chi Headquarters is proactive, establishing a model pledge program that is focused on being a purely intellectual experience. Most recently, Headquarters invested millions of dollars to roll out more tools and opportunities to ensure a value and intellectual based experience for all chapters. Additionally, all workshops aim to educate members to conduct themselves as gentlemen, understand the consequences of hazing, and create a positive environment and culture, giving no opportunities for hazing.

10. The newly elected Student Senate President and Vice President are Sigma Chi’s!
