An Open Letter to Your Dog Back Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Because we all wish we could tell our dogs how important they are to us.

To one of my best friends,

I just wanted to say how much I love you and I cannot thank you enough for all of your years by my side. I still remember the day we got you like it was yesterday. Me, with my uneven bangs and Limited Too polo, and you, with your 7-week-old fluff. I couldn’t believe how little you were.

I remember our first mornings together, me eating my cereal on the ground next to your puppy dish and begging mom to let me stay home from school so we could play outside. You were pretty much a celebrity in my 4th grade classroom and the neighborhood cul-de-sac.

You have been in every school dance, graduation, and first-day-of-school photo, except for the college ones of course. Believe me, if I could have teleported you here it would have happened.

Some nights, no, more like every night I wish I could teleport you to my apartment. Because you do not ask questions or judge me for watching 30 episodes of Friday Night Lights in a row. You just snuggle up next to me and beg for whatever snack I may be maxing out on.

You have always been my first greeter at the door. Whether it has been five minutes or five weeks since I saw you, you have always showed the same excitement. And just so you know, every enthusiastic bark and slobbery kiss is so appreciated.

You have always known when I am sick and have been the first to be by my side through all of the coughing and sneezing and Price-Is-Right episodes. You bring this sense of comfort that cannot be described in words, but is felt wholeheartedly.

You make me feel like I am the best human being on the planet, even if I only just gave you a treat or took you for a walk. No act is too small in your eyes. I truly hate the thought of you having to wonder when I will be back. These last four years had to have been so confusing for you.

With that, I want to thank you for all of your selfless love. I know I am busy these days and cannot always be around to play and give you the attention you deserve. I cannot wait for the day when I can take you on an adventure like I always did when I was younger.

It makes me sad to think that you too are getting older, and that our days together will continue to dwindle. That’s why I wanted to write this letter (even though you will never hear it or understand its content) to say thank you for all of the love, support, and undivided attention you have given me over the years.

I have loved every second of growing up with you.

Love always,

Your Human
