The Rotunda at Bryant University was filled with students, staff, officials, and locals at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 23 to greet Governor John Kasich (R-OH) for a town hall as a part of his presidential campaign. He was introduced by Bryant University President Ronald Machtley who he served with on the United States House of Representatives for about five years.
“This election will be one of the most important elections in my life,” Machtley said. “This is the only candidate, in my opinion, who understands the purpose, privilege, and prestige of the presidency.”
Machtley not only discussed his respect for Kasich and his qualifications, but he also announced that his vote will be one for Kasich. The two served on the Armed Services Committee together and have known each other for over 25 years. Before getting serious, Kasich explained how the two played together on the congressional basketball team, Kasich beating out Machtley for the MVP award.
Kasich started with an inspirational speech about serving a purpose. He called for everyone to use the skills they have to change the world – that it’s not just about “Big Whigs,” but about everyone.
He covered issues like national debt, social security, healthcare, higher education, student loans, and terrorism, but focused on the leadership spirit he believes is necessary in running the country.
“The spirit of our country which needs to be regenerated is born in us,” he said.
Kasich cited leadership as America’s fundamental problem. He believes that leaders get people to rise to another level, regardless of political party.
Kasich is the only candidate to make a stop at Bryant University, but candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are also making stops in Rhode Island this weekend.
