Throwback to the Class of ‘16 Freshman Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Scranton chapter.

Before we had Snapchat filters, we were young freshmen wandering through Scranton. Now, it is our senior year. We no longer have to worry about finding a party or making new friends on our floor. As summer and graduation approaches, many members of the class of 2016 are concerned about post-grad life. However, let us reflect on the beautiful mess of 2012, our freshman year.

1. Unlimited meal plan means late night every night

Hellllllloooo breakfast sandwiches.

2. Clarity, Die Young, and Wagon Wheel

At parties, walking through your dorm building, walking anywhere- you probably heard one of these songs blasting.

3. Harlem Shake and Gangnam Style

Two dances that you really didn’t understand, but strangely couldn’t stop watching. Even worse, you wanted to participate in one or you already did.

4. The Office parade

Remember when you were walking through campus and thought, “Hey that looks like Dwight from The Office!?” And it actually was. We were all sad the office came to an end, but pretty excited the cast was honored on campus.

5. The world ending.

December 21, 2012, our first intersession, the world was supposedly ending. Were we going to ever have the chance to see our new college best friends again!?! Don’t worry, we’re still here.

6. Vine and Twitter

Facebook became slightly less popular, and the big thing was all about making seconds worth of clips that really didn’t make sense.

7. Bandage Skirts, peplums and dedicated black foot shoes

You’d do anything to avoid Scranton blackfoot. So, you most likely had one pair of shoes dedicated for basement parties that turned black after one wear. Don’t forget about the short tight skirt that you had to tell yourself was actually comfortable, even if you were freezing.

8. Using MapQuest to navigate the hill section during syllabus week

North Web, Clay, or whatever those courts are with random houses up the alley, you somehow had to find your way around.

9. The food trucks on Mulberry

We all remember the real name, and the grease that it provided. RIP Meenier Weenier.

10. KONY 2012

You HAD to save the invisible children with your purchase of a bracelet and sticker.

11. Ridiculously Photogenic Guy, Keyboard Cat, and Bad Luck Brian

2012 was the year of a series of memes. Your freshman dorm RA poster boards most likely had a few.

12. The horse head mask

At least one person on you floor haunted you with this.

13. Temple Run, Fruit Ninja, Candy Crush, and Doodle Jump

You basically traded in your Gameboy for your iPhone, welcoming you to the world of these games.

Dominique is your everyday Northeastern Pennsylvanian, and will probably have a different hair style every time you see her. She loves being outdoors, and finding an adventure in everything. She currently studies as a Senior History, Political Science, and International Studies triple major with a concentration in Italian at the University of Scranton. Dominique also studied abroad in Rome, Italy, not only falling in love with everything Italian, all the pizza, but with travel itself. Weird facts: Her favorite word is melanzane (eggplant), she writes most of her notes backwards (right to left too) and has a 130lb white German Shepherd named Kitty (he’s a boy).
