10 Ways to Know You’ve Found the Right Roommate

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

After freshman year, you’ve probably lost some trust in the whole roommate situation. Maybe you were thrown into a room with the roommate that insisted on singing in the shower at 7AM, or was your roommate a party animal that came in at 2AM every night? Either way, it probably was not what you expected from your first experience out of home. But now you are older and wiser and you know what you are looking for from your roommate.

The roommate hunt is much like finding a significant other. You want someone that you can rely on, while simultaneously being crazy fun. You don’t want to commit to a year lease with someone you are unsure of, but at the end of the day you’ll never know until you try.

You’ll know that you have found The One if:

  • They stay up with you binge-watching Greys Anatomy.
  • They braid your hair before you go to work because you are to hung-over to even try.
  • You come home to a clean bathroom without having to ask.
  • They agree to 2AM Taco Bell runs, just because.
  • You can share each other’s clothing.
  • They are supportive of all your bad habits, including never going to the gym.
  • They stay up with you the night before your final because you couldn’t do it alone.
  • They pretend that your jokes are funny, even when you know they aren’t.
  • They don’t complain about your mess, because they know their own mess will be in the way too.
  • Most importantly, they have seen all your flaws and still choose to live with you.

There are plenty of fish in the sea, but only one is meant to be your roomie.

I am a current journalism student at the University of Utah. I have spent my years in college studying, traveling, and writing. I am a campus writer for the University of Utah and have my own blog Beautiful Detour. If I am not on campus I am hopefully off in another country meeting new people...or lying in my bed under a million blankets watching that day's netflix binge.
