This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Xavier chapter.

Customers can really make or break your day while working at a coffee shop.  From the regulars to first-timers, here are the types of customers you meet as a barista.

  1. The one who orders soy/almond/coconut milk…and whipped cream

  2. The one who asks what every single pastry is…

  3. …and then doesn’t order any

  4. The one who orders a Starbucks drink at a coffee shop that is definitely not a Starbucks

  5. The cute one who makes small talk

  6. The cute one who orders but leaves right after getting his/her drink

  7. The one who always gives the best tips

  8. The one who gets three cents back in change and doesn’t tip

  9. The one who orders a super complicated drink that isn’t on the real menu…

  10. …and then complains when you don’t know how to make their drink

  11. The one who asks what espresso is

  12. The one who calls it EXpresso instead of espresso

  13. The one who only comes in when you are working

  14. The one who awkwardly flirts with you or tries to ask you out

  15. The one who stands right next to the drink pickup and stares you down as you make their drink

  16. The one who asks “is this my drink?” to every single drink that isn’t theirs

  17. The one who has never worked in a coffee shop but tries to tell you how to do your job

  18. The one who always argues about their rewards points

  19. The one who expects you to remember their order after one visit

  20. The one that calls you their favorite barista

  21. The one whose order you actually always remember

  22. The one with the major attitude

  23. The one who brings in their Starbucks cup and tries to get a discount when you are clearly not Starbucks. Sorry bud that doesn’t work here

  24. The one who orders while talking on the phone (and tries to shush you when you ask what they want to order)

  25. The adorable elderly one

  26. The one who asks for skim milk and extra whipped cream

  27. The pre-teen who likes non-coffee drinks

  28. The one who orders three minutes before close

  29. The one who holds up the line trying to decide what to order

  30. The one who tries to order coffee like they are in Europe

  31. The one who has come back for about three refills…in two hours

  32. The one who thinks you’re flirting because you ask for their name for their cup

  33. The one who watches your every move while making their drink (so of course you mess up and have to start over)

  34. The one who orders decaf

  35. The one who questions what you said. “I have a non-fat latte for Sam.”  “Is that non-fat?”  Uhm…yes?

No matter what kind of customer you are, just remember we hate mornings as much as you do, but it will all be okay with a cup of coffee.
