10 Hair Struggles Only Black Girls Can Understand, as Told by One

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

1.Finding the right products

This is a never-ending battle that takes a lot of patience, but when you finally find that perfect curling gel or perm press, it was all worth it.

2.Your arms going numb while doing your hair

We constantly envy the girls that can air-dry their hair and it look flawless as always.  Meanwhile, the many-hour long process of blow-drying and straightening our hair leaves our arms feeling like pins and needles.

3.Spending hours straightening your hair and it frizzing up the second you walk into a party

Girl, you better just work that fro and hit the dance floor!

4.Being tender-headed

…..and having your mom smack your head with the brush while she was trying to braid your hair growing up. * cue the hysterical crying *

5.Trying to comb your hair out after swimming

I just LOVE when my hair mats itself up or turns to dreadlocks

6.The ridiculous things we do to try and grow out our hair

Biotin pills, Hairfinity, hair masks, you name it, we’ve tried it.  Not to mention the insane amounts of money spent trying to get our hair to grow just a few more inches.

7.Spending endless hours watching hair tutorials on YouTube

How did I just accidentally spend 5 hours watching YouTube videos?  How do they make their hair look so perfect?  Why doesn’t my wash ‘n go style look like theirs?  So many questions!

8.Trying to get your silk scarf to stay on through the night

Still confused as to how it ended up at the foot of my bed.  I better buy some silk pillowcases for backup.

9.When your head weighs an extra 5 lbs with your sew-in or box braid extensions in

Honestly though, the pain is worth it to have the 22” 24” gorgeous, long locks

10.Endless hours spent at the beauty shop

You better be sure to pack snacks, a book, and a phone charger because Lord knows you’re going to be there a solid 10 hours.  Even though we hate getting our hair tugged on all day, we love hearing the latest gossip and catching up with the ladies at the shop.

West Virginia University. Alpha Phi. Grey's Anatomy over everything. I just really miss Harambe. "I fall in love with places I've never been and people I've never met."
I am originally from Westchester, New York. I came to WVU for my undergrad in Strategic Communications with an emphasis on Public Relations and a minor in Sports Communication. My involvment on campus includes blogging for Her Campus, a sister of Alpha Phi, the assistant director of the media team on the Mountaineer Maniacs executive board and lastly, an athletic communications intern with the WVU Athletic Communications office. I will be graduating in May of 2017 and I am looking forward to getting started with my future career in Journalism and Public Relations!
