Why You Should Love Your Major

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Your college major isn’t supposed to be something that you’re just “interested” in. You will be studying, learning, living and breathing your major throughout your college career. You should be completely head over heels with what you’re studying for four plus years.

A lot of college students come to their college or university completely unsure of what they want to major in, which is fine. Declare your major as undeclared and figure it out as you go along. Don’t claim a major just because you are sort of interested in it, if you aren’t fully committed to studying that subject then just be an undeclared major.

If you aren’t fully interested in your major, you probably won’t do so well in your classes. Choosing a major you aren’t fully invested in and then taking those classes can bring down your GPA and confidence. You won’t enjoy going to your classes, learning and will hate studying even more than usual.

Our parents have influenced us throughout our lives, but don’t let them influence your decision on your college major. Just because your parents have chosen a certain path, doesn’t mean you have to choose the same one. Don’t let your parents pressure you into picking a major so you can be successful just like them, you will find success on your own doing something you love.

Everyone asks themselves this question from time to time when choosing a major and career: Should I have a job that I hate and make a lot of money, or have a job that I love and make a decent amount of money? The answer is this; don’t pick a major just because you know you’ll make a lot of money doing it. You could have all of the money in the world but hate your job and be unhappy. On the other hand, you could make a sufficient amount of money, love your job and everything else will eventually fall into place.

Follow your heart when choosing your major. If you can’t see yourself loving it 20 years from now, then that’s not the major for you. People may tell you: “You’ll never make any money doing that,” or ask “But what would you do majoring in that?” Don’t let them break your passion and determination for your major.

Looking forward to your future, you should feel excited for all of the endless possibilities. You should be eager to start an internship or your career doing what you love, not going into the career field and immediately hating it. Sure, work isn’t always fun, that’s why it’s called “work.” But, you shouldn’t be absolutely hating the idea of going to work in the morning.

When you love your major and eventually your career, it will never feel like just work. Don’t choose a major to please others, for the salary or because you know you’ll get a job after graduation. Your major is the center of your college and future career, so choose wisely and passionately. Make sure you do what you love, and love what you do.
