Common Misconceptions About Skidmore

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

Skidmore is known as a party school

Although this might be striking to some of us Skid Kids, our beloved school has the perception to some as a generic “party school.” One of the best things about Skidmore is the sheer variety of activities happening at any time. Yes, there will always be a party to go to when you want to go out, but there will also be an art show, an acapella performance, or a sports game, where you can blow off some steam and hang out with your friends. Since Skidmore is such a friendly environment, there is no judgment about what choices you make and when—as long as you’re having fun.

Skidmore is only for artists

This stereotype plagues Skidmore students quite often, especially those of us who aren’t particularly artsy. Skidmore has strengths in its arts, business, science sectors, to name a few areas on campus, where students are equally involved. Skidmore is undoubtedly a school where artists flourish, but so does everyone else.

There are no (dateable) boys at Skidmore

“The ratio:” all of us single gals interested in guys have experienced it, but that doesn’t mean there are simply no boys. National college statistics show that there are more women than men earning their degrees right now, so Skidmore is no different from many other higher learning institutions. It can feel hard to meet guys here, but sometimes its hard to meet anyone here, so do your best to stay authentic and put yourself out there; worry about yourself first, ladies.

Cliques don’t exist

Unfortunately, the existence of cliques is a drawback of attending a small school like ours. Its easy for people to settle into friend groups they made during their first year and call it a day. Meeting people through classes and extra curricular activities are a great way to make some more friends. Its always a great idea to attend events you might not normally think about or join a new club, even get coffee with someone from your Scriber Seminar (#tbt). There are endless possibilities to branch out!

Everyone smokes weed

This is another misnomer that people constantly attach to the school. Yes, students smoke—it’s a liberal college campus; let’s be realistic. Yet, there are many students who simply don’t choose to smoke for a multitude of reasons and that’s just fine.

Skidmore is only a business school

Since we are one of the few liberal arts colleges with a full business program, people interested in the school often speculate about the impact of tbusiness program on our curriculum. Staying true to our interdisciplinary nature, all of our academic areas are strong—not just business. Its something that makes us unique!
