There will always be a standard of beauty that we are expected to live up to. We have grown up in an environment that encourages us to pick at our own perfections. If we don’t look like the person on the magazine covers or talk like America’s Sweetheart, we are considered flawed. But I promise you there is nothing flawed about you because beauty comes in a variety of forms. You may be a size two or you may be a size fourteen; it does not matter because numbers do not define your worth.

You may think that girl sitting next to you is absolutely stunning, but she might just think the exact same thing about you. As one wise girl on tumblr said, “Just because you don’t look like somebody who you think is attractive doesn’t mean you aren’t attractive. Flowers are pretty, but so are Christmas lights and they look nothing alike” – Jessie (sscreamss). If we can accept the difference between Christmas lights and flowers, why can’t we accept our own differences? Yes, it seems silly to compare ourselves to these two random objects, but if you reflect on the meaning behind her words, it puts beauty in perspective. We have a say over our own lives and how we perceive ourselves. So define it and own it without limitations. Be your own person. No one is stopping you but yourself. Try waking up in the morning and looking in the mirror, give yourself a compliment, and go about your day. Do this for a week and then reflect on how you feel at the end of the week. Trust me, you’ll feel like a new person. The path to confidence is not an easy one, but it is a feasible one. Everyone’s experience is different, so go at your own pace and you, too, could achieve the confidence of Kanye.

Happy National Confidence Day

Here’s a little something that is a big reminder about beauty:

Makenna Dixon-Essien is your average Bay Area native who embraces her inner Martha Stewart, loves animals more than life, and lives in the clouds. She aspires to be the next Jane Goodall or George Schaller because who wouldn't. In her free time. . . just kidding she's pre-vet and has no free time. However, she enjoys spending the majority of her day socailizing, listening to music, and reading. She loves all things oragnic and wastes her summer Saturday's at the farmers market. You will always catch this girl laughing life away, especially when she has good company or a pup to play with. Fell free to leave comments and ask her questions, she is extremely friendly. :)  Follow her on twitter @makennade_ WFU '20
