Campus Celeb: Hannah Tinnin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Our Campus Celeb this week is Hannah Tinnin, a senior from Atlanta, Georgia. She is studying Journalism and has a big leadership role in a prominent club on campus, AAF. She’s definitely a student to look up to, so check her out!

Her Campus Mizzou: What is you major/minor?

Hannah Tinnin: Bachelor of Journalism with an emphasis on Strategic Communication and a minor in Political Science.

HCM: What made you decide on this major/minor?

HT: Since high school, I knew I wanted to go into a field that involved writing. I always loved writing and editing, so my immediate reasoning was to be a journalism major. So, I started looking at the top schools for a journalism degree, and, of course, Mizzou was the number one choice. My first thought was, “What the heck is Mizzou?” since I was an out-of-state student living in Atlanta, Georgia. But the minute I visited I fell in love. However, it wasn’t until my junior year that I realized my creative mind had found its match in the strategic communication track. It was the perfect blend of my writing talent and creative spirit.

HCM: What is your dream job? What do you want to do after college?

HT: After college, I hope to pursue a career in public relations and move to a mid-sized, fun city like Nashville. I would love to work in PR for client industries such as hospitals or entertainment, and my dream would be to work PR for a hospital like St. Jude. It’s been a lifelong goal of mine to write a novel and be a content manager for a presidential campaign.

HCM: How long have you been a part of AAF?

HT: I’ve been involved with the organization since my sophomore year, and I have served as the Vice President since Spring 2016.

HCM: What is your position on AAF, and what are the responsibilities of your position?

HT: Vice President. As VP, I’m responsible for planning speakers to come talk to our 100+ member chapter, organizing agency trips with the rest of the exec board, helping the president with any needs she has, and presenting career advice and industry expertise at chapter meetings.

HCM: What is your favorite part of AAF?

HT: My favorite part of AAF is getting to assist younger journalism students in their pursuit of their dream careers. I love being approached by younger students who have questions about classes to take, emphasis area decisions and any concerns or questions they have about the opportunities in the j school. I see a bit of myself in them, and there were people before me who helped me figure it all out. Being able to give back to my school and be a source of mentorship for passionate journalism students is fun and fulfilling.

HCM: What is your advice for other journalism majors at Mizzou?

HT: Breathe. Seriously. The j school is a whirlwind of excitement and stress and a ton of hard work, but if you’re in it, it means you’re passionate about it, and your goals are going to be achieved. Breathe and know that there are countless opportunities available to you. All you have to do is put yourself out there and try. But don’t forget to find time to get to know your professors and your peers. It’s a hard program but has so much potential to give you the best four years of your life. Breathe and take it class by class, day by day.
