How to Transition Your Wardrobe Seamlessly From Fall to Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

As the last of the leaves fall, pumpkin spice turns to peppermint mocha, and all you can think about is Thanksgiving and Christmas break, it’s clear that winter is on it’s way and fall is almost forgotten. With this transition comes an awkward time where your outfits either make you sweat or leave you freezing. Here’s a few tips on how to make your favorite fall staples work for theearly winter months.

1. Vests

Vests are perfect for this transition month because they’re a staple you have to layer. Throw on a long sleeve, pair it with a great flannel, and throw on your favorite puffy vest. The layers will keep you warm, and the vest will protect you from wind. It won’t overpower you like your winter coat: it’ll give you the perfect amount of style, comfort, and warmth for the varyingNovember temperatures.

2. Scarves

Sometimes, no matter how many layers you have on, walking to class is still a freezing nightmare. Pairing a big, fluffy scarf with a sweater or light jacket can help to block the wind and allows you to bury your face in something warm. They’re easy to take off and on if you get too warm, and look cute with any outfit. Scarves are another fall staple that you can make work in cooler months by choosing thicker materials or adding warmer top layers.

3. Bean boots

Bean boots are the classic fall staple, and they truly go with anything. If you don’t have the warm inserts though, they’re not a match for the Maine winters. To get away with keeping these in your wardrobe through winter, pair them with warm wool socks or layer up! Tucking in a pair of jeans or leggings to tall socks looks cute and feels comfortable!

4. Flannels

Fall is the time to break out all your flannels, but it seems like the season isn’t long enough to wear all your favorites. To make them work in the winter, try layering them with cotton long sleeves or under armor. For even more warmth, button your flannels and throw a cardigan over it. You can roll the sleeves up together and be cozy all day long.

5. Dresses and skirts

Just because winter weather comes around doesn’t mean you have to put away your favorite dresses and skirts; make fleece-lined tights your best friend. Pairing a dress or skirt with fleece-lined tights, riding boots, and a sweater or cardigan allows your to still wear your favorite summer and fall outfits while being warm enough to battle winter.

The key to winter is layering. You can make any of your favorite pieces work by adding leggings, socks, sweaters, or anything else to give you a little extra warmth!
