6 Struggles of Being a December Baby

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

The holidays are a great time of the year for hot chocolate and fuzzy socks. What they’re not a good time of the year for is birthdays. With the thought of the holidays coming up so soon, it’s easy for friends and family to overlook birthdays in the month of December. Being a December baby isn’t ideal for those of us who live this reality. If you’re one of the unlucky ones like me, I’m sure you can relate to these struggles.

1. Having your birthday and Christmas celebrated on the same day.

We know it’s convenient that our birthday is near a time where our family is usually all together, but just having a random cake during a Christmas party is kind of awkward.

2. “Here’s your birthday/Christmas gift!”

This is something we hear all too often this month. It’s not that we’re ungrateful, but we have to think of presents for both your birthday and Christmas, and having it get all tied into one for us is not exactly ideal.

3. Getting your birthday presents in Christmas wrapping paper.

For December babies, a major pet peeve is getting a present and having Santa wrapping paper on it and not knowing whether it is a Christmas or birthday present. It gets confusing.

4. Remembering things you wanted to ask for and not being able to for an entire year.

I’m sure we have all done this before. We get so jealous of the people who can see what their friends got for Christmas and then ask for it on their birthday in a couple months. Not the case here. We either forget by the time December rolls around again or buy it ourselves.

5. Being poor for 10 months, getting money in December, then spending it all in January.

In December with the holidays and our birthday, we rack up a decent amount of money during the month. The issue is that we spend it all in January and are poor again for 10 months.

6. Having your birthday during finals or during vacation.

If you’re a December baby whose birthday is during vacation or the hectic time of finals week, this can be even worse. Going home may not be close to where your friends from school live and studying for finals on your birthday is the worst.

These struggles are too real for those of us with birthdays coming up this month and we would really appreciate some extra love. If you’re reading this as someone who doesn’t have a December birthday, don’t take your privileges for granted and could we please get some birthday wrapping paper and a card that doesn’t say “Happy Holidays”?
