Mustang Challenge: Give These On-Campus Spots Some Love

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

After my first semester as a sophomore, and a transfer student, I noticed a very interesting detail about the undergrad students of this school. With the abundance of libraries, outdoor areas, and facilities that we have in general, we are all attracted to the same exact spots. “Hey, let’s go to Fondren/ Mac’s/ Umph/ *insert all other generic hangout spots here.* Ok cool, but like let’s go somewhere new. There’s so many other places on campus that we just take for granted and they are literally walking distance, I mean c’mon, let’s hang somewhere other than Fondren. Here are some of the areas on campus that definitely need more love and affection than we give them credit for.

1. Bridwell/Hamon/Any one of the five other libraries than Fondren

At some point in the year I heard this myth that there are six libraries on campus. It turns out that this myth is true. Fondren is not the only library to spend all of your time, no matter how good that Starbucks looks, you’ve got a whole bunch of other sceneries to check out before you leave this campus.

2. Specifically, the Bush Presidential Library

I realized this was an issue when my friends from San Antonio (and their families) had come to visit the library that is less than a minute away from me. Honestly, I have yet to walk inside. Maybe you’ve been inside like once, but then again that’s only like once. We need to give Bush more love.

3. Lawyers Inn

Did you know that there is a cafeteria in the Law school? And we heard their breakfast tacos are the bomb. I’m pretty devastated we are all missing out on them because in all honesty I’m advocating this place without having ever set foot in it. However, I’ve heard that it is an extremely quiet area so don’t you even dare drop that spoon by accident, unless you want to get stared down by all of Dedman.

4. The A-LEC

A perfect place to study that not many people take advantage of. You’ve got people right around the corner ready to help you in any class, and all for free! Take advantage of your surroundings people! Some people pay for this! They’ve also got pretty good workshops for self-betterment so why not try it out?

5. Meadows Museum

This place has the largest collection of Spanish art outside of Spain and it is practically in your backyard. Let me amp this place up even more by saying that they have pieces by famous painters such as Salvador Dali, Diego Rivera, and even Pablo Picasso. Regardless to if you like art or not you can still venture in and brag to your peers about how you’ve seen a Picasso in real life. It will make you sound sophisticated AF. You’re welcome.

I am most certainly guilty of almost always being at Fondren or Mac’s, but soon I am planning to venture into every corner of this school. Let’s give these abandoned spots some loving while we explore our campus some more. After all, not every kid that has a chance to go to SMU so let’s take it all in while we’re here.

We are the SMU Team.
