Scholar of Indigenous Studies: Dr. Amanda Morris

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

As the final week of classes comes to a close, I would just like to note on someone who has been an inspiration throughout the semester. Dr. Amanda Morris has taught me so much about the world in just a few short weeks and her knowledge will continue to guide me as I work closely with her on an independent study.

This semester, I took a course called Native American Women Writers with Dr. Morris. I thought this class seemed interesting just by its title and I was curious to see what I would be learning. The class was nothing like I thought it would be because it was so engaging and interactive. I was expecting a typical literature course where we read novels and write papers, but Dr. Morris surprised me. Yes, we read, but we did so much more. We watched movies I’ve never heard of, checked out websites I would have never knew existed, and listened to some of the most amazing music I’ve ever heard. All of these things opened my eyes to a whole new world of Native Americans that I didn’t know where still around (how pathetic that we think Indigenous people don’t live here anymore.)

Coming into Dr. Morris’ class, I didn’t think I would take such an interest in the material but as time progressed I became infuriated with some of the information I was reading. I began to feel the passion about the Indigenous people like Dr. Morris felt and I knew I wanted to do more. I wanted to make a difference like she does by teaching students about Native Americans in her classes.

I couldn’t be happier that Dr. Morris has offered to take me under her wing for the independent study I will be beginning next semester. I know she has so much to teach me yet, and I’m thrilled to learn all she has to offer.

Dr. Morris has taught me so much throughout the course of this semester and I’m so glad my time learning from her doesn’t have to end with this class. I can’t wait to start up with my writing for Her Campus next semester with a fresh outlook on Indigenous issues with the help and guidance of Dr. Amanda Morris.

Thank you for all you have done for me, Dr. Morris. Your passion is seen throughout all you do.

While being a member of Kutztown University’s Her Campus, I was the Vice President and lead editor. Her Campus afforded me many opportunities to voice my thoughts and opinions freely, and let them be heard by anyone reading. I found Her Campus to be a great tool in helping me advance my future in writing and editing.
