6 Tips for Traveling During The Holidays

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

Finals are done, which can only mean one thing, time to go home! For those of you flying during the holidays, here are my tips to make your travels easier.

1. Prepare

The end of December is one of the busiest travel times of the year. Knowing that, give yourself extra time at the airport. Check in for your flight beforehand to have one less line to go through.

2. Pack accordingly

Whether you’re checking a bag or taking a carry-on, know what is and isn’t allowed in your bag. In a carry-on, there are different restrictions surrounding what liquids you can carry. Security is especially nit-picky about this, so it’s a good idea to double check everything beforehand. As for your checked baggage, the standard maximum allowed weight is typically 50 pounds (or 22.5kg). If your bag is overweight, you’ll be there awkwardly repacking everything.

3. Bring snacks

This is my number one tip for flying no matter what time of year, but it especially important at the holidays. Flights might be delayed or cancelled, so it’s good to have snacks on hand so you don’t end up in the situation where you’re hungry and have to go find food.

4. Download your airline’s app (if they have one) and turn on notifications!

Notifications are a blessing of the 21st century. Missed the announcement that your flight is delayed? No problem – your app will let you know.

5. Dress in layers

You’re never going to be exactly sure how cold or warm it will be in the airport or on the plane, so dress in layers to allow yourself to easily adapt to a wide range of temperatures. One of my favourite things to bring on the plane is a big cozy scarf: it’s great at keeping you warm, but can double as a neck pillow just in case.

6. Be flexible.

Stay calm and remember to breathe. Everyone at the airport is trying to make it to their destination, just like you. Don’t panic if your flight gets delayed because it will get sorted out. Patience is key!

Safe travels everyone!
