Salma Moussa is someone I have had the pleasure to know for almost a decade now. She and I met back in elementary school, and although we went to separate high-schools and I left the country for my freshmen year, we were still able to maintain our friendship till now. She is someone who is extremely funny, kind and motivated to create change. This summer Salma is actually taking a trip to Kenya for volunteer work. To raise awareness about her initative to create global change, I thought of interviewing her to show our community what a strong leader she is and if you would like to contribute to her cause you can!
How would you describe yourself?
If I had to describe myself in three words, I would say I’m ambitious, strong-willed, and spirited. I would call myself ambitious because I focus heavily on my career and education, so that I can make a positive change in the world based on what I am most passionate about, which is mainly minority/human rights and health care. I’m strong-willed because I don’t let things phase me and I keep at it. I’m determined to succeed and finish my goals to the best of my abilities. Last but not least, I’d say I’m quite the spirited person because I stand up for what is right even if it’s not the popular opinion. I’m true to myself always and choose to be a constant learner of life. I love travel and people.
Are you involved on campus?
I’m actually involved in three clubs on campus. I am the Youth Venture Co-Lead for Engineers Without Borders, which involves visiting local high schools and university classrooms to educate students on current world issues (with our focus being in sub-saharan Africa) as well as the innovative ways we can strive to solve these issues. I also hold Vice President positions in WE Charity and Campus Cursive. Besides that, I’ve been doing some undergraduate research in neuroscience under Dr. Zielinski since my second year of University.
How did you hear about We Charity?
I heard about WE Charity through one of my friends who I had just met at the time. She held an executive position in the club and suggested I joined.
What motivated you to sign up for a me to we trip?
My strong desire to help people in need in a very hands-on and involved manner has led me to go on the search for mission trip organizations to travel through for several years. I finally found ME to WE through my involvement with WE Charity since ME to WE is actually part of a family of organizations associated with WE Charity. So it just happened to fall into place that way.
What kind of work will you be doing in Kenya?
In Kenya, I’ll be doing a lot of medical-related aid work since my trip is created for Pre-Med students. More specifically, I’ll be assisting and shadowing doctors in a new surgical wing in Nairobi, as well as building a school and working towards restoring a community. An added bonus of my trip is getting to meet and interact with a group of local women who will teach me about their culture and have me do activities with them such as rafiki bracelet-making. I can’t wait!

I’m leaving on June 24, 2017.
