Taboo of Single Vs. Relationships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ithaca chapter.

Today, the dating and relationship world has completely changed from past generations. Back then, everything that had to do with your significant other was clear, dates were simple and relationships, for the most part, were viewed as a good things. In today’s society you can be “talking” to someone, but not dating, and you can like each other but still be dating other people, and often relationships are seen as a hindrance. Now when someone asks you whether you’re in a relationship or not a third option has arised. You can be single, you can be taken or you can be “focusing on yourself.”

I am all for not being in a relationship because you’re not ready or to just spend time with yourself, (you do you girl!) but this new third option suggests that a relationship is an obstacle or a barrier for many women. Why can’t there be a healthy balance of having a significant other while still building your own empire?

If you can’t dedicate your time to being with someone else while also bettering yourself every day, then you might not be ready to be in a relationship. A healthy relationship not only brings two people closer together but also allows each person to grow individually. If you’re with the right person you both should be able to “work on yourself” and “build your empire” while still being together. Someone who truly cares about you should push you to become your better self every day, and should challenge you to improve. There shouldn’t be a choice to make between loving yourself and loving your significant other as a supportive significant other and relationship would enable these two things to come together.

Think about celebrity power couples such as Kimye, Jay Z and Beyonce, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, or David and Victoria Beckham. They are all not only successful as couples, but successful individually as well. They all have built empires and very successful careers for themselves, while simultaneously being in a relationship. They’re known not only as power couples but also individually as successful rappers, singers, actors, business people and more. They’ve been each other’s number one fans and supporters, which has allowed them to be prosperous separately while being able to make their relationship work. They are living proof that you can have both.

So next time you think you can’t have it all – remember Bey and Jay and realize that you can, you just have to find the right one to build that empire with.
