Beautiful Places Pt. 1: Lisbon

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DU chapter.

Europe’s new capital of cool is no other than the thriving metropolis by the sea: Lisbon, Portugal.  With beautiful white-bleached limestone buildings, red clay roof tops, and steep hills this charming city is one for the travel books.

Getting around is easy with the lines of street trams. Although if you drive in the narrow, hillside streets (which why would you do that? Stroll around! See the sites!) don’t park in their way!

Thanks to the sea-side temperatures, it’s vitrually T-shirt weather all year long. Alos, it boasts numerous maritime historical sites dating back to the era of Christopher Columbus.

If you’re hungry, you not only have the entire Mediterraniean at your disposal, but also local Lisbon cuisine, such as pastéis de belém, or custard cream tarts which have been a staple of Lisbon’s gatronomic heritage for ages.

Are gold, baroque chapels and breath-taking mosaics your thing? Well then, do not hesitate to visit Lisbon’s Museu Nacional do Azulejo. It’s home to an enourmous number of works made from the special azulejos (hand-painted tiles), as well as art dated as far back as the Ottoman Empire.

Finally, if you want something to remember Lisbon by, make sure to hit the “Feira da ladra”, or market of the thief, where you can find anything and everything Portugeuse.

The city awaits, go explore!
