I Stayed Home for Spring Break and Here’s What Happened

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marist chapter.

While the rest of my class spent a week off enjoying warmer temperatures, tanning on white sand beaches and probably forgetting their names, I stayed put in good ol’ Connecticut. I watched through my phone screen as virtually every college student in the world shot-gunned cheap beer, boozed and cruised their way through tropical waters and sweated through flowered shirts at some pretty questionable clubs. The FOMO hit hard when a blizzard trapped me inside for a couple days, but at least I can this about my supposedly lame Spring Break:

I didn’t lose anything.

After a week at home, I am happy to report that all my personal belongings are still in my possession. My wallet, ID, cash, phone and dignity have not been compromised by pit-pocketing locals or one too many shots of tequila.

I didn’t spend money.

I would like to point out that when I refer to myself as a broke college student, I really mean it. I’m still trying to figure out how all these twenty-somethings managed to swing weeklong trips to Punta Cana, Cancun or Miami. Questions aside, my bank account and future self are very thankful that I chose to be a grandma this week.

I didn’t drink.

No vacation means no excuse to party 24/7. Without a trip booked, this break is just a random week in the middle of March. And day drinking on a casual Wednesday at your parents’ house isn’t exactly a healthy thing to do. It’s safe to say my liver is very happy.

I didn’t break routine.

A lazy week at home means my sleep schedule is intact, my diet hasn’t changed and I could still work out. After all, this summer bod isn’t gonna build itself.

I didn’t burn.

So I didn’t spend this break drinking pina coladas on a beach somewhere, but at least my pale skin isn’t suffering now. By staying up north, I couldn’t shock my system or not-so-accidently forget to put on sunscreen.

I still relaxed.

I stepped away from schoolwork and allowed myself to be a lazy bum for a few days. Ok so most of my lounging took place in bed rather than poolside, but at least I could say I’m caught up on all my Netflix shows.

~

In a few days I’ll be returning to campus well rested, sober and with more money than before. That’s not something a lot of college students can say after Spring Break.
