If you all couldn’t tell from my New Year’s resolution article, I don’t believe in cutting anything out cold turkey. Why? I think it is incredibly hard to deprive yourself of something out of nowhere! This is why I started my social media detox over a year ago (Take that Kendall Jenner.)

The first to go: Twitter. Over a year ago.

I LOVED Twitter and  it was easy to just post, post, POST! My reason for deleting it? I realized my tweets were pointless and dumb, and didn’t want a future employer to see it.

Plans to sign up again: Yes. I plan on creating a more professional Twitter that I will feel comfortable showing to future employers.

The second to go: Instagram. A couple of months ago.

Let me ask you all a few questions: Why do you you have an Instagram? Do you actually have conversations with people on there? Do you realize you are low-key stalking people? For me, I realized I was taking photos not for the memory, but for the likes. I also asked myself why I should care about “that girl who sat next to me in PHIL: 109” and the picture she had posted about having a mango smoothie. Then I started to feel kind of creepy and dumb. Deleted.

Plans to sign up again: Maybe. If I go through a breakup in the near future, I may break down and create one and post pics of myself having so much fun so everyone knows I’m good. (That’s sarcasm, but I may remake one, I don’t have any plans to do so right now, but I am not 100% opposed to the idea.)

The third to go: Snapchat. A few weeks ago.

Do I miss the front facing flash? YES. Do I miss making myself look like a dog? Eh. Do I miss seeing my best friend’s old roommate grinding on people at the club and drinking way too much? Nah. You can send me your selfie via text. ‘Nuff said.

Plans to sign up again: Nope.

Overall, do I think everyone should try to detox from social media? OH MY GOSH YES, but I won’t judge you if you don’t. The only thing that makes me upset is when you are on social media while trying to have a conversation with me. My biggest take away was the shock, and disappointment from my friends. This was a personal choice and I am still confused as to why people need anything more than a phone call, text, or email from me. Deleting these three apps have been amazing and I don’t plan on re-downloading them anytime soon, but we will see!

Disclaimer: I realize that one of the biggest social media sites, Facebook, is not on here. I am toying with the idea of getting rid of it but it is actually very helpful with getting in touch with my classmates, and getting updates from my school’s clubs at the moment!
