The Old Taylor is Dead?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ECU chapter.

By now I’m sure you’ve listened to Taylor Swift’s new single, “Look what you made me do.” Full disclosure: I’ve always been a Taylor fan. She’s been one of my guilty pleasure jams since elementary school. Something about her iconic breakup songs resonated with my 12 year old heart. I’ve followed along as she went from countries sweat heart, to the pop princess that made 1989. To say that I was excited about new music, is an understatement. It had been three years since her last album and I was itching for something new to jam to.

I have to say though, I’m less than impressed. I’m just as upset as you are about this feeling. I just keep listening to the new song, hoping that the rest of the album will be better. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a catchy song, but it’s not catchy in the way a Taylor song should be, it’s more catchy in the way “Call me Maybe” was when it came out. I still love Taylor, and I’m sure I’m still going to be overly invested in this new album, but I didn’t love this song. Kudos to Taylor for not being afraid to change her sound and try out something new though. That’s the sign of a good artist, one that’s not afraid to use the same beat as “I’m too sexy for my shirt.”

I hope I like the rest of the album, but until then, I’m going to keep listening to LWYMMD.
