Don’t Judge a Literal Book by Its Cover

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

Every single time I start a book, I never finish it. I either google what happens in the end or I watch the movie/show before reading it. I also would always go to the bookstore and choose books based on how pretty their covers are. I judged a literal book by its cover.

This summer I decided to give reading another try. My goal was to finish the books that I started reading.

So, I started by reading Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. I was hooked as soon as I started reading. It was about a community in Australia and focused on parents whose children all went to the same school. The book revolves around a murder that happens at a fundraising party for the parents and reveals clues/hints as the story evolves.

After finishing that book, I felt great. I had accomplished my goal and I was left wanting more to read. So, when I went to look for my next read, I bought another book by the same author called The Husband’s Secret. In this book, it goes between three different narrators and how they are all unknowingly involved in the husband’s secret.

I had finished TWO books!! Next, I read Girl on the Train and The DaVinci Code. All this reading made me feel great. I was accomplishing my goals by also doing something that is important to fit into your everyday life. I always would read before going to bed. It helped me 1. Fall asleep and 2. Take a break from reality. I think so often we get caught up with what is going on with our friends, our studies, our future, etc. and forget to take a break.

So, next time you go to watch Netflix to escape reality, pick up a book and read for 20 minutes.
