Why Going Out Of State Was The BEST Decision!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OK State chapter.

Here are 6 reasons why going to school out of state was the best decision

Going out of your comfort zone

Going to a completely new state is scary. You don’t know anyone, you aren’t just a short drive away from home, and your parents can’t help you through everything. You are all on your own, and its scary, but empowering at the same time.

Meeting new people

If you’re from out of state, you’re of course going to have to meet new friends. Coming from California, I didn’t know anyone. It was a great way to start over and meet all new people. Now, I love being able to introduce my friends back home to my new friends here.

Appreciating your home state so much more

I never realized how much I take California for granted until I’m gone. I hate it when I’m there, but when I’m back at school, I find myself wishing I was a little bit closer to it. You also realize how much you miss your family since you don’t see them everyday and are lucky to see them once a month.

Getting a different experience than from your friends back home

Its exciting to be able to come home and realize you were able to experience something completely different than all your friends at home who went to a school maybe an hour away from home. They are probably hanging out with their friends from high school, which isn’t a bad thing, but you have opened yourself up to all of these new things.

Learning new traditions and norms

You never realize how different every state is until you get to experience it yourself. It’s a definite culture shock at first, but in a good way. You’ll also start picking up on sayings and words. I never thought I would ever say y’all, and now I find myself saying it all the time.

Trying new foods

Being from California, I was used to In-N-Out and everything gluten free. Going to school out of state has introduced me to amazing BBQ, Whataburger, and biscuits and gravy. I don’t know how I survived without them in my life before.

I’m so happy with my decision to go to school out of state because of all the experiences I never would have gotten. I have made lifelong friends, I fell in love with this state and everything having to do with it, and I never would have opened myself up to all these new things if I stayed in state. All in all, go to school out of state and make new experiences.
